New York City Birth Records
In 1866, New York City (still only Manhattan at this point) and Brooklyn began creating official birth certificates. These certificates can be found on the Municipal Archives' Historical Vital Records website and in person at the Municipal Archives in Manhattan. We recommend searching the Historical Vital Records website by certificate number.

Vital Records has birth records (since 1881) for all of New York State except New York City. It does not have these records for New York City (the boroughs of Manhattan, Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx, and Richmond (Staten Island)). Birth records are also available from the local Registrar of Vital Statistics where the event occurred. Requirements

In New York City, birth record requests by mail orders are charged at $15 per copy. A request made in person costs $17.75 for the first copy and $15 for each additional copy. A requester placing a birth certificate order online must possess a personal credit, debit, or checking account.

The New York State Birth Index is now online You can browse through the images online at the Internet Archive, totally free. The records for 1881-1935 are online now, and the remaining records for 1936-1942 will be added within the next week or two.

New York Birth records are managed by the Vital Records Section of New York Department of Health for most of the state from 1881 to present. Birth records for New York City, however, are managed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Certified copies of birth records are only available to the registrant or the parents.
